Random notes about covering:
- Cover the bottom first, then wrap the top over it.
- Trim the top fabric uniform because it will show through the tape, but you want this on the bottom.
- For tapes around corners use bias ply tape and stretch it around the corner. Get a loose shape you want before you start glueing.
- Glue the edge of the tape first where you want it then shrink it down, then paint the glue through it to eliminate bubbles.
- Consider carefully how things will overlap and make it neat because it will show through the paint.
- If a tape isn't straight or ugly, peal it up and do it again.
- Before you primer inspect every tape edge carefully and make sure the pinked edges are laying flat, if needed hit it with the iron to flatten it. Any edge that sticks up will be a pain later.
- Clean the fabric really well before primer. Do not use shop rags or paper towls. Use microfiber and tack rag to get the lint off of it.
- Sand the primer with 220 to get rid of any orange peel, then hit with 320 and 400 to have a very nice substrate to lay paint on. Be very careful around anything that sticks out.
- When sanding around tapes use very light pressure and if needed just stuff with scotch bright pad.
- Make sure that the surface has a very nice finish with 400 or scotch bright, nothing is sticking up (you can use super glue to fix a tape if needed, just a pin drop and kicker.
- The more perfect the primer is, the better the paint.
- Shoot the primer with 1.5 tip and heavy.
- After sanding clean with zepp window cleaner and microfiber. Don't get a shop towel or paper towel near it, it will add lint and show.
- clean clean clean before paint.
- For color use 1.3 tip and set the gun pretty high like 25 psi. You really want very fine mist, the gun must break up the paint very well. If you can't get 25psi or fine mist look at your compressor setup and use high flow fittings/filters.
- You want nice even strokes, I used 1/2 overlap with 1/2 turn in on wide open fluid and tightened up the fan slightly. You want the edges to be a mist and the center fan to lay flat. Good overage, but not enough paint to orange peel.
- Reducer should be 1 part or a little more or a little less for 70f shooting. If your paint isn't reduced enough it won't mist or flow well.
- Use a 1/2 cap of accelerator in your paint cup. You want the paint resistant to dust as fast as possible.
- When shooting a second coat to fix something scuff really well all the way to the edge. If you shoot color on top of shiny color it will just peel off.
- When you paint the stabs and tail features you need to mount stuff in a fixture, hanging won't work.
